본 프로젝트는 농심 율촌재단의 정체성을 견고히 하고, 사회적 가치를 보다 명확하게 전달하기 위한 심벌 디자인 작업이다. 기존의 로고타입(Logotype) 중심 디자인에서 벗어나, 사회적 재단으로서의 본질을 담아내기 위해 한국의 전통 문양과 유럽의 이스커천(Escutcheon, 방패 문장) 형식을 결합한 유일무이한 상징을 창조하는 것이 목표였다. MEE International은 농심과 율촌재단이 지닌 사회 공헌적 가치를 유럽의 이스커천 형태로 강렬하게 표현하고, 이를 한국의 전통 문양을 통해 기호화하여 현대적으로 재해석하였다.
이스커천은 방패형 문장(紋章, Coat of Arms)으로, 역사적으로 보호와 수호의 의미를 지닌다. 현재까지도 국가·기관·기업 등의 상징으로 활용되며, 동물·식물·천체·신화적 요소를 담아 각 조직의 정체성을 효과적으로 표현하는 방식으로 발전해왔다. 한국 전통 문양 또한 오랜 시간 장수, 부귀, 다복 등의 염원을 담아 발전해왔으며, 단순한 장식이 아니라 인간의 정신과 기원을 전달하는 주술적 상징으로 기능했다. 특히 본 심벌 디자인은 길상(吉祥) 문양을 핵심으로 삼았다. 길(吉)은 행복하고 선한 일을, 상(祥)은 아름답고 기쁜 조짐을 뜻하며, 이는 율촌재단이 추구하는 사회적 가치와 일맥상통한다.
이러한 상징성을 바탕으로, 본 디자인은 농심(農心), 율촌재단(栗忖財團), 기담(奇潭: 새로움이 솟아나는 연못) 세 가지 키워드를 중심으로 전개되었다. 율촌재단의 사회 공헌적 가치를 형상화하기 위해, 농심과 율촌재단을 연못(기담, 奇潭)에 비유하고, 연못 속에서 솟아나는 새로운 가능성을 율촌재단을 통해 성장하는 청소년으로 표현하였다. 전통적으로 물과 깊은 관계를 맺고 있는 용(龍)은, 보은과 승천을 상징하는 존재로, 율촌재단의 보호 속에서 자란 청소년들이 다시금 사회에 기여하며 재단의 가치가 지속적으로 순환됨을 나타낸다.
또한 심벌의 장식성을 극대화하는 요소로 구름(靑雲, 청운)을 선택하였다. 구름은 비와 생명의 근원으로 연못(기담)이 마르지 않도록 돕는 역할을 하며, 동시에 청운(靑雲)은 청년들의 포부와 희망을 상징한다. 이는 미래 세대를 위한 이상과 꿈을 나타내며, 한국 전통 문양에서도 용·봉황과 함께 쓰이며 상서로움을 더하는 중요한 요소로 활용되어 왔다. 이러한 요소들을 조화롭게 배치함으로써 전통적 아름다움과 현대적 실용성이 공존하는 심벌을 완성하였다.
심벌은 다양한 매체에서 활용될 수 있도록 유연한 변형 디자인이 적용되었다. 핵심 요소인 용, 봉황, 방패는 독립적으로도 사용 가능하도록 설계되었으며, 패턴화 과정을 거쳐 현판, 플래그, 상품 패키지, 온라인 플랫폼 등 다양한 영역에서 활용할 수 있도록 확장성을 고려하였다. 이를 통해, 율촌재단의 철학과 가치를 보다 직관적으로 전달하는 강렬하면서도 유연한 브랜드 아이덴티티를 구축하였다.
이 프로젝트는 단순한 로고 디자인을 넘어, 율촌재단의 사명과 가치를 담아낸 상징적 구조물이다. 유럽의 웅장한 이스커천 형식과 한국 전통 문양의 깊이 있는 길상적 의미를 결합하여, 단순한 형상이 아닌 강렬한 서사를 담은 디자인을 완성하였다. 전통과 현대가 공존하는 이 심벌은 율촌재단의 사회 공헌 가치를 직관적으로 전달하며, 다양한 플랫폼에서 지속적으로 활용될 수 있는 상징으로 자리 잡을 것이다.
This project focuses on designing a symbolic emblem for the Nongshim Yulchon Foundation, reinforcing its identity and social mission. Moving beyond a logotype-centered approach, we sought to create a truly unique emblem that embodies the foundation’s essence as a social contribution institution by merging elements of traditional Korean patterns with the grandeur of European escutcheons (heraldic shields). MEE International reinterpreted the foundation’s philanthropic vision through the bold, authoritative form of an escutcheon, while integrating motifs from Korean traditional designs to create a powerful visual language. The escutcheon, historically a symbol of protection and prestige, is widely used today by institutions and corporations to encapsulate their unique identities. It represents defense, honor, and a ward against threats, making it an ideal framework to express the foundation’s protective and nurturing role.
Korean traditional patterns, rich in meanings of longevity, prosperity, and harmony, play a fundamental role in this emblem’s composition. These designs are not merely ornamental but serve as visual representations of human desires, wishes, and spiritual aspirations. Particularly, the emblem centers around the auspicious (吉祥) symbolism deeply embedded in Korean tradition—“吉 (gil)” representing happiness and virtue, and “祥 (sang)” signifying beauty and good fortune. By integrating these elements, the emblem reflects both the heritage and future-oriented philosophy of the Yulchon Foundation. The conceptual foundation of this design was structured around three core themes: Nongshim (農心), representing the foundation’s commitment to social welfare; Yulchon Foundation (栗忖財團), symbolizing a protector and enabler of new opportunities; and Gidam (奇潭: A wellspring of inspiration and renewal), representing the boundless potential nurtured by the foundation.
To visually articulate the Yulchon Foundation’s social contribution, we symbolized Nongshim and Yulchon Foundation as “Gidam Pond”, a reservoir of knowledge and growth. Emerging from this pond, the youth benefiting from the foundation’s support are represented as dragons. In traditional beliefs, dragons are deeply connected to water, symbolizing wisdom, resilience, and gratitude. Just as dragons are believed to dwell in deep waters before ascending to the skies, the youth nurtured by Yulchon Foundation receive protection and empowerment, ultimately rising to give back to society in a cyclical act of gratitude and growth.
To amplify the ornamental depth and symbolic significance of the emblem, clouds (靑雲, Cheongun) were incorporated. Clouds are revered in Korean iconography as a source of rain and life, ensuring that the pond (Gidam) never dries up. Symbolically, Cheongun represents the ambitions and aspirations of youth, aligning with the foundation’s vision of fostering future leaders. Historically, clouds have been paired with dragons and phoenixes in traditional Korean art to signify prosperity and divine favor. Their presence in the emblem not only enhances its authenticity but also deepens its narrative richness.
A key feature of the emblem’s design is adaptability across various applications. The primary components—the dragon, phoenix, and shield—were deliberately designed to function as independent visual elements, allowing for flexible usage across multiple platforms. Additionally, the emblem was transformed into pattern-based variations, expanding its potential applications from official plaques and flags to merchandise, branding materials, and digital platforms.
More than just a logo, this emblem is a symbolic narrative that encapsulates the Yulchon Foundation’s mission, legacy, and future aspirations. By fusing the majestic authority of European escutcheons with the philosophical depth of Korean traditional motifs, the design serves as a timeless representation of the foundation’s social impact. This powerful emblem will continue to reinforce the Yulchon Foundation’s presence, ensuring its mission is visually recognized and celebrated across diverse mediums.
