2018/02

본 프로젝트는 2018 평창 동계올림픽 개막과 함께 올림픽스타디움 앞 올림픽프라자에 개관한 ‘문화ICT관’의 전시 디자인 프로젝트이다.

본 전시는 한국 동시대 미술을 조명하는 공간으로, 회화, 조각, 설치, 미디어 등 다양한 장르의 예술 작품을 소개하는 것을 목표로 한다. 올림픽 기간 동안 전 세계에 K-ART의 흐름과 현재 지형도를 알리는 데 중점을 두며, 국립현대미술관(MMCA)에서 대여한 이중섭, 김환기, 강익중, 정연두 등 20여 명의 대가들의 작품을 선보인다. 차분하고 클래식한 전시 공간 디자인을 적용하여 한국 근현대 미술의 소박한 아름다움을 극대화하고자 하였다.

전시장 면적은 약 341㎡로, 예상 동시 관람객 약 50명을 효율적으로 수용하기에는 부족한 규모였다. 관람객의 유입 경로는 1전시장을 거쳐 들어오는 경우와 2전시장으로 바로 들어오는 경우 두 가지로 나뉜다. 이 두 동선이 자연스럽게 이어지고 혼선이 발생하지 않도록 하는 것이 중요한 과제였다.​ 관람객 간의 혼선을 최소화하기 위해, 전시장 내부를 대각선으로 구획하여 시각적으로 명확한 공간 분할을 유도하였다. 이를 통해 여러 갈래의 입구에서 상대적으로 넓은 PART 01로 자연스럽게 발걸음이 옮겨지도록 설계되었으며, 별도의 동선 통제가 없어도 방문객의 흐름이 부드럽게 이어질 수 있도록 하였다.

PART 01에서는 작품을 감상하며 점진적으로 깊이 있는 경험을 하게 되며, 이후 PART 02로 이동하면 격조 있는 사각형 공간이 펼쳐진다. 이곳은 집중도를 높이기 위해 중앙에 사방을 향해 앉을 수 있는 소파를 배치하였으며, 네 개의 벽면에 전시된 작품들이 관람객을 감싸듯 배치되어, 작품의 견고함과 웅장함이 더욱 극대화될 수 있도록 하였다. 전시의 마지막 공간인 PART 03에서는 입체 조형물 작품이 피날레를 장식한다. 공간을 단순히 구획별로 나눈 것이 아니라, 관람객이 하나의 거대한 스토리 속을 유기적으로 걸어가는 듯한 경험을 제공하도록 설계하였다.

작품과 공간이 상호작용하며 자연스러운 대화를 이루도록 구성된 본 전시는, 한국 미술의 현재성과 미래 가치를 조명하는 동시에, 관람객이 예술을 더욱 친밀하게 체험할 수 있도록 기획되었다. 회화와 조각뿐만 아니라 대규모 설치작업과 미디어 아트를 포함하여 한국 미술의 역동성을 선보이는 ‘현재진행형’ 전시로 기획되었다. 이를 통해 단순한 작품 감상이 아니라, 한국 미술의 흐름과 가능성을 직관적으로 이해할 수 있는 전시로 기억되길 기대한다.

PART 01. 삶과 예술의 웅변 (The Power of Life and Art)

1800년대 말부터 1900년대 초까지 한국 미술의 격동을 조명하며, 전통적인 동양화의 틀에서 벗어나 더욱 다채로워진 한국 미술의 발전을 소개한다. 낮은 채도의 벽면을 사용하여 공간에 적절한 무게감을 부여하고, 높은 조형물을 동선의 중심에 배치하여 안정감을 형성하였다. 또한, 바닥 단을 높여 낮은 조형물 작품과의 시각적 균형을 맞추고 관람 동선을 정리하였다.

PART 02. 무채색의 격조 (The Dignity of Monochrome)

근현대를 거치며 변화해온 다양한 예술적 변주를 소개하며, 작가들의 내면과 작품 방식의 변화 과정을 조명한다. 공간의 중심에는 의자를 배치하여 관람객들이 작품을 감상하며 휴식을 취할 수 있도록 하였으며, ‘무채색의 격조’라는 주제에 걸맞게 절제된 분위기를 연출하였다.

PART 03. 신세대의 역동 (The Dynamism of the New Generation)

걸출한 거장들과 더불어 현대의 예술가들이 다양한 방식으로 세상과 소통하는 모습을 조명하며, 세계 미술계와 함께 호흡하는 한국 동시대 미술을 조망한다. 화려한 색감의 입체 작품과 미디어 아트를 배치하여 전시의 클라이맥스를 형성하였으며, 간접 조명을 활용하여 미래지향적이고 강렬한 분위기를 극대화하였다.

이 전시는 한국 미술의 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래를 한 공간에서 경험할 수 있도록 기획되었으며, 작품을 통해 한국 미술의 정체성과 역동성을 탐색할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

This project is an exhibition design initiative for the "Cultural ICT Pavilion," which opened alongside the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics at the Olympic Plaza in front of the Olympic Stadium.

The exhibition serves as a platform to showcase contemporary Korean art across diverse genres, including painting, sculpture, installation, and media art. Its primary objective is to highlight the trajectory and current landscape of K-ART to a global audience during the Olympic Games. Featuring works by over 20 renowned artists—including Lee Jung-seop, Kim Whanki, Kang Ik-joong, and Jung Yeon-doo—the exhibition, in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), adopts a refined and classic spatial design to maximize the understated beauty of modern and contemporary Korean art.

With an exhibition space of approximately 341㎡, accommodating an estimated 50 simultaneous visitors posed a challenge. The visitor entry routes were divided into two: one leading directly to Exhibition Hall 2 and the other passing through Exhibition Hall 1. Ensuring a seamless flow between these pathways while avoiding congestion was a critical design consideration.

To minimize crowding, diagonal partitions were strategically incorporated to establish clear visual and spatial divisions. This layout naturally guided visitors toward the broader PART 01 section, creating an organic flow without the need for additional traffic control.

In PART 01, visitors engage with a progressively immersive viewing experience before transitioning into PART 02, a distinguished rectangular space designed for contemplation. This area features centrally positioned seating, allowing visitors to fully absorb the artworks displayed on all four surrounding walls. The deliberate placement enhances the perception of stability and grandeur, reinforcing the thematic weight of the exhibition. The journey culminates in PART 03, where a striking sculptural installation serves as the finale. Rather than segmenting the space into isolated sections, the exhibition was curated as a cohesive and dynamic narrative, guiding visitors through an integrated artistic experience.

This exhibition is designed to facilitate a dialogue between artwork and space, offering visitors an intimate and interactive encounter with contemporary Korean art. By incorporating large-scale installations and media works alongside traditional paintings and sculptures, the exhibition captures the evolving dynamism of Korean art in real-time. Rather than merely presenting artworks, it aims to provide an intuitive understanding of Korea’s artistic trajectory and potential.

PART 01. The Power of Life and Art

Exploring the transformative period of Korean art from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, this section highlights the shift beyond traditional East Asian painting techniques, introducing a more diverse and enriched artistic landscape. Muted wall tones establish a balanced spatial weight, while towering sculptures serve as focal points within the visitor pathway, enhancing spatial coherence. The raised platform further refines the display of lower sculptural works, ensuring a structured and immersive viewing experience.

PART 02. The Dignity of Monochrome

This section traces the evolution of artistic expression through modern and contemporary periods, illuminating changes in artistic techniques and personal introspections of the featured artists. Centrally placed seating provides a space for contemplation, aligning with the exhibition’s theme of "The Dignity of Monochrome," where restraint and refinement define the atmosphere.

PART 03. The Dynamism of the New Generation

Showcasing both established masters and emerging contemporary artists, this section highlights how Korean art engages in dialogue with the global art scene. Vibrant sculptures and multimedia works create an electrifying climax, enhanced by indirect lighting to emphasize a futuristic and dynamic atmosphere.

This exhibition offers visitors a comprehensive experience of Korean art’s past, present, and future within a single space. By engaging with the artworks, audiences gain deeper insight into the identity and vibrancy of Korean contemporary art.
