삼성전자 R&D 센터는 약 5만 3천㎡의 부지에 연면적 33만 8천㎡(63빌딩의 두 배 규모)로 조성된 첨단 연구 캠퍼스로, 삼성전자의 미래 사업 역량을 집결하는 핵심 연구 시설이다. 이 공간은 창의적인 연구와 혁신적인 아이디어가 끊임없이 교류되는 장으로, 최적의 업무 환경 조성을 목표로 설계되었다. 미인터내셔날은 본 프로젝트의 사무 공간 인테리어 디자인을 담당하여, 효율성과 창의성을 극대화할 수 있는 공간을 구현하였다.

사무 공간은 사람들이 가장 많은 시간을 보내는 장소 중 하나로, 단순히 기능적인 측면을 넘어 사용자의 감성과 심리에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소이다. 이에 따라 공간을 더욱 개방적으로 구성하고, 자연스럽고 창의적인 분위기를 조성하는 데 중점을 두었다. 구조적인 변화를 최소화하면서도 한정된 회의실과 휴게 공간에서 개방감을 극대화하는 전략을 채택하여, 보다 효율적인 업무 수행과 원활한 커뮤니케이션을 유도하는 환경을 구축하였다.

이번 프로젝트의 핵심 키워드는 소통(Communication), 집중(Concentration), 창의(Creative), 휴식(Refresh)으로, 자연이 주는 편안함과 에너지를 공간 안으로 담아내어 유연하고 자율적인 업무 문화를 형성하고자 하였다. 복도 벽면에는 자연이 담긴 회화 작품을 배치하여 이동하는 동안에도 심리적 안정감을 제공하고, 단조로울 수 있는 업무 공간에는 색채의 변화를 주어 활력을 더하였다. 사계절의 변화에서 영감을 얻은 회의실 디자인은 봄(Spring), 여름(Summer), 가을(Autumn), 겨울(Winter) 테마를 층별로 적용하고, 여섯 가지 패턴을 활용하여 자연의 조각, 고요함, 성장, 생명력, 질서, 바람의 개념을 반영한 아트월을 제작하였다. 이러한 디자인 요소들은 자연을 연상시키는 패브릭 소재와 결합하여 공간에 따뜻한 감성과 풍부한 에너지를 부여하며, 사무 공간의 경직된 이미지를 완화하여 유연한 사고와 창의적인 발상을 촉진한다.

휴게 공간 또한 자연의 요소를 적극 반영하여 사고의 전환과 활력을 도모할 수 있도록 기획되었다. 녹색 컬러를 테이블, 조명, 바닥 등에 적용하여 신선하고 차분한 분위기를 조성하고, 따뜻한 조명과 텍스처감이 살아있는 타일, 내추럴한 소재의 테이블을 배치하여 카페처럼 편안하고 친숙한 공간을 연출하였다. 이는 직원들이 긴 업무 속에서도 부담 없이 머물며 심리적 안정을 느낄 수 있도록 하는 역할을 하며, 단순한 휴식 공간이 아니라 창의적 사고를 위한 재충전의 공간으로 활용될 수 있도록 설계되었다.

본 프로젝트를 통해 삼성전자 R&D 센터의 사무 공간은 기능성과 감성을 아우르는 혁신적인 업무 환경으로 거듭났다. 자연을 담은 디자인을 바탕으로 개방감과 창의성을 강조한 공간은 업무 효율을 극대화할 뿐만 아니라 직원들의 심리적 안정과 유연한 사고를 유도하는 역할을 한다. 전형적인 사무 공간의 딱딱한 분위기를 탈피하여, 보다 인간 중심적인 환경을 조성하는 데 주력하였으며, 미인터내셔날은 공간 디자인을 통해 삼성전자의 연구 인력들이 자유롭게 소통하고 협업할 수 있도록 최적의 업무 환경을 구축하였다. 이번 프로젝트는 단순한 오피스 공간을 넘어, 창의성과 효율성이 공존하는 새로운 개념의 업무 공간으로 자리 잡으며, 업무 환경이 단순한 공간이 아니라 기업의 혁신과 성장의 원동력이 될 수 있음을 보여주는 사례가 되었다.

The Samsung Electronics R&D Center is a cutting-edge research campus spanning approximately 53,000 square meters with a total floor area of 338,000 square meters—twice the size of the iconic 63 Building. Serving as a hub where Samsung's core research capabilities converge, this facility is designed as a dynamic space where creativity and innovation continuously intersect. To support this vision, MEE International was entrusted with designing the office interiors to optimize efficiency and foster a work environment that enhances productivity and collaboration while promoting a sense of openness and creativity. Given that offices are among the spaces where individuals spend the most time, their impact goes beyond mere functionality, influencing emotions and cognitive engagement. With this in mind, the design focused on maximizing openness in limited meeting and relaxation areas while ensuring a seamless workflow and encouraging spontaneous communication. Rather than implementing large-scale structural changes, the approach emphasized intuitive spatial organization, allowing for a natural and fluid work experience.

The project was developed around four key principles: Communication, Concentration, Creativity, and Refresh. By incorporating the calming and invigorating qualities of nature, the design sought to cultivate a work culture that is both dynamic and comfortable. The hallways leading to workspaces were adorned with paintings of natural landscapes, fostering a sense of tranquility, while variations in color within the partitioned office spaces added energy and vibrancy to the environment. Inspired by the changing seasons, the meeting rooms were thematically designed based on spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each floor was assigned a unique seasonal motif, and six distinct patterns were developed for art walls, representing concepts such as fragments of nature, serenity, growth, vitality, order, and wind. These elements were complemented by natural fabric materials, enriching the workspace with warmth and organic energy while softening the rigidity of traditional office aesthetics to encourage flexible thinking and innovation.

The emphasis on nature extended into the relaxation areas, which were designed to enhance cognitive flexibility and provide employees with an opportunity to recharge. Shades of green were applied to tables, lighting, and flooring to create a visually soothing atmosphere, while warm-toned lighting, textured tiles, and natural wood furnishings evoked the cozy familiarity of a café. These spaces were conceived not merely as rest areas but as environments where employees could reflect, engage in creative thought, and regain energy. The use of biophilic design principles ensured that employees could experience a sense of renewal throughout their workday, fostering an environment that supports well-being and productivity.

Through this project, the Samsung Electronics R&D Center office spaces have been transformed into a forward-thinking, innovation-driven environment that integrates both functionality and emotion. By incorporating elements of nature into the workspace, the design not only enhances efficiency but also provides a psychological sense of ease, allowing for more open and fluid collaboration. Moving away from the conventional image of rigid office settings, the project successfully established a human-centric design approach that prioritizes well-being and creativity. MEE International’s spatial design ensures that Samsung’s research teams can seamlessly collaborate and innovate within an optimized and inspiring work environment. This project is more than just an office space transformation; it is a testament to how work environments can be catalysts for corporate innovation and growth, proving that workplace design can be a powerful driver of creativity, efficiency, and long-term success.
