본 프로젝트는 문화체육관광부 소속 대한민국역사박물관에서 한미 동맹 70주년과 조미수호통상조약 체결 141주년을 기념하여 기획된 ‘한미 동맹 70주년 특별전’이다. 이번 전시는 한미 양국 관계의 역사를 다각도로 조명하며, 역사적 맥락을 유기적으로 연결하여 객관적이고 정확한 전달을 목표로 기획 및 디자인되었다.

전시는 <숫자로 본 한미동맹>, <한미 10대 전쟁 영웅>, <한미동맹을 만들고 지켜낸 사람들>, <만화로 보는 한미동맹 70년>, <포토월: 한미동맹은 가치동맹입니다> 총 다섯 개의 섹션으로 구성되었다. 기존 공간의 구조를 최대한 활용하면서, 방문객의 자연스러운 동선을 고려한 공간 디자인을 적용하였다.

전시장으로 향하는 입구 계단에는 총 11개의 배너가 설치되어 있으며, 강렬한 색감과 간결한 메시지를 통해 관람객의 시선을 끌고 전시의 시작을 알리는 역할을 한다. 계단을 오르며 전시로 진입하는 관람객들에게 환영의 분위기를 조성하고, 테라스까지 이어지는 배너 그래픽을 통해 공간적 흐름을 자연스럽게 유도하였다.

전시장 내부에서는 10명의 전쟁 영웅을 주제로 한 대형 그래픽 월이 공간을 압도하는 주요 요소로 배치되었다. 이 공간은 참전 용사들의 희생을 기리는 의미로 강렬한 레몬색 배경을 적용하여, ‘영웅을 기억하는 나라’라는 슬로건을 강조하고 희망적인 메시지를 전달한다. 인접한 공간에는 한미 양국 대통령과 주요 지도자들의 사진을 배치하여 전시의 무게감을 더하고, 동맹의 역사적 흐름을 시각적으로 연결하였다. 맞은편 벽면에는 한미 동맹과 관련된 주요 인물들의 어록을 시대별로 차트화한 그래픽 작업물이 설치되어 있어 70년 동안의 동맹 관계의 발전을 한눈에 조망할 수 있도록 구성하였다.

전시 개막 행사를 위한 스피치 공간은 전시장 중앙에 배치되었으며, 한 국가의 정상급 연설이 이루어지는 공간임을 고려하여 네이비와 레드 카펫을 조합하여 격식 있는 분위기를 연출하였다. 또한 영상 매체 송출을 고려하여 연설 배경에 적절한 높이로 전시 타이틀을 배치하여 가시성을 극대화하였다. 전시를 마친 후 에스컬레이터 홀에서는 한국의 대표적인 만화가 이원복 작가의 대형 만화책을 만나볼 수 있다. 만화를 활용한 전시 콘텐츠는 방문객이 보다 쉽고 흥미롭게 한미 동맹의 역사를 접할 수 있도록 구성되었으며, 적절한 높이와 각도로 배치된 입간판 형태의 부스를 통해 시각적 접근성을 높였다.

본 전시는 단순히 역사적 사건을 나열하는 것이 아니라, 한미 동맹이 구축해온 가치를 반영하고, 관람객들에게 의미 있는 경험을 제공하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 방문객의 자연스러운 이동 동선을 고려한 공간 배치와 강렬한 시각적 요소들을 통해, 한미 관계의 역사와 중요성을 보다 직관적이고 효과적으로 전달하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 또한, 다채로운 그래픽과 인터랙티브 요소를 활용하여 보다 역동적이고 몰입감 있는 전시 환경을 조성하였다.

This project is a special exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance and the 141st anniversary of the Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation between Korea and the United States. Organized by the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical evolution of the ROK-U.S. relationship. The design prioritizes historical accuracy, clarity, and a seamless narrative structure, ensuring an engaging and informative experience for visitors.

The exhibition is divided into five key sections: , <10 War Heroes of the ROK-U.S. Alliance>, , <70 Years of the ROK-U.S. Alliance in Cartoons>, and . Rather than imposing a rigid visitor flow, the exhibition was designed to integrate seamlessly into the museum’s existing circulation patterns. The entrance staircase features 11 bold banners with high-impact colors and concise messaging, naturally guiding visitors toward the exhibition hall while setting an engaging and welcoming atmosphere.

Inside the exhibition space, a large-scale graphic wall dedicated to the 10 war heroes serves as a focal point. The bright lemon-yellow background symbolizes vitality and optimism, reinforcing the “A Nation That Remembers Its Heroes” slogan. Adjacent to this section, additional banners featuring U.S. and South Korean Presidents enhance the sense of historical continuity and reverence for veterans. Directly across from the Wall of Heroes, a chronological timeline of key statements from prominent figures traces the history of the ROK-U.S. alliance, providing visitors with an at-a-glance understanding of its evolution over seven decades.

For the opening ceremony, a speech area was carefully designed at the center of the exhibition. Given its role as a platform for national leaders, the space was accentuated with navy and red carpeting to create a dignified, formal atmosphere. The exhibition title was strategically positioned at an optimal height for enhanced visibility during televised broadcasts.

Upon exiting the hall, visitors encounter a large-scale comic book display by renowned Korean cartoonist Lee Won-bok. This interactive installation presents the 70-year history of the ROK-U.S. alliance in an engaging and accessible format. The freestanding booth-like structure ensures optimal viewing angles and intuitive readability, making the content easily approachable for a wide audience.

This exhibition goes beyond a simple historical timeline—it is a multisensory experience designed to deepen visitors’ understanding of the alliance’s core values and its continued significance. By carefully curating the spatial layout, graphic storytelling, and immersive design elements, the exhibition offers a compelling and dynamic exploration of the ROK-U.S. alliance, ensuring that its history is not only remembered but also meaningfully experienced.
